Reading Review - Part B

As mentioned in my first blog entry, the areas I am interested in exploring further in preparation for when I become a Teacher Librarian include digital literacy, digital citizenship, and literacy support tools available online. Some resources I can use to help me grow my understanding of these topics include (by subject area):

Digital literacy

Media Smarts

Media Smarts is Canadian organization located in Ottawa that focuses on digital and media literacy. The site contains a treasure trove of information including general information on digital and media literacy, Canadian focused research on media literacy in Canada, educational games and teacher resources. I look forwarded to reading the "From Access to Engagement: Building a Digital Media Literacy Strategy for Canada" report I found on the site along with the various information provide for teachers, such as the "Digital and Media Literacy Outcomes by Province & Territory" to learn what is new in Manitoba. What I like best is the information is from a Canadian perspective. The organization also hosts an annual Media Literacy Week.

BC Government Education and Training - Digital Literacy

Shared with me by Darcy McNee, this site contains the Digital Literacy Framework for the province of British Columbia. Based on the ISTE standards, the framework provides a guideline for what the BC government sees as a profile of a digitally literate student at different stages of development.

Literacy with ICT Across the Curriculum

Developed by the Manitoba Department of Education, Literacy with ICT is a continuum providing guidance to Manitoba teachers on Information and Communication technology and its inclusion in the curriculum. The site defines terms and provides resources for understanding Literacy with ICT and provides teachers with guidance on infusing technology into their classes. Based on the inquiry process, the continuum focuses on the learning that is supported through technology, not the development of skill with specific technologies.

Digital citizenship (digital identity)

common sense education

Common Sense education is the education oriented component of the Common Sense website. Common Sense is a independent non-profit in the United States focused on helping children, parents, and educators navigate technology. The "For Educators" section of the site contains a curriculum, resources, and games dedicated to the topic of digital citizenship. The site also offers free PD and "Advice Articles" for teachers. I have, in the past, used their Kindergarten and Grade 1 materials to introduce digital citizenship concepts to students in those grades. The songs and videos make for great discussion starters.

Online literacy tools

As someone whose job currently involves researching and educating myself on Microsoft Teams, I have come across a tool related to helping students build their reading skills known as Reading Progress.  While my current focus is on supporting staff members at the U of M, as a former elementary ICT teacher I am interested in tools that assist teachers in reaching their students.

Reading Progress Webinar

Reading Progress in Microsoft Teams (YouTube)

In this YouTube playlist, Mike Tholfsen (Principal Product Manager on the Microsoft Education team) provides a collection of videos on the Reading Progress tool available for free in Microsoft Teams. Videos cover topics such as how to use Reading Progress, New Features and an in-depth webinar on Reading Progress. Another tool - Reading Coach - is also introduced. I look forward to watching a selection of these videos to learn more about the Reading Progress tool.

Reading Progress in Microsoft Teams to improve student reading fluency - now rolled out globally!

In this blog post Mike Tholfsen introduces users to the Reading Progress tool in Microsoft Teams for education. He provides resources to get started with Reading Progress and talks the reader through the four parts to the Reading Progress experience.
